The Story Behind Oobend

In 2020, our founder heard something from her grandmother that she would never forget:

“My feet don’t fit into shoes anymore.”

By the afternoon, her feet would swell. Calluses made everything feel tighter, and her toes needed room to breathe. She wasn’t alone. Millions of women experience the same struggle, yet traditional footwear often fails to accommodate the natural shape and changing needs of the human foot.

Her grandmother hadn’t given up on life. She simply felt let down by a footwear industry that seemed to have forgotten what real feet actually look and feel like.

So, our founder set out to find a better shoe.

She thought it would be easy.

It wasn’t.

When “Comfortable” Shoes Still Hurt

Orthopedic shoes often came with rigid structures and heavy materials that felt uncomfortable and restrictive.

Traditional athletic shoes, even those marketed as comfortable, frequently featured narrow, tapered shapes that squeezed the toes. Thick, elevated heels could also make walking feel less natural and stable.

Barefoot shoes offered a more foot-shaped design, with wider toe boxes and flatter soles, but many used stiff canvas uppers that could irritate sensitive feet.

There was a gap in the market: a shoe that could combine a natural foot-shaped design with exceptional softness and flexibility, allowing the foot to change comfortably throughout the day.

So our founder decided to create one.

Two Years of Rethinking Footwear

For two years, she worked with artisans who understood the art of knitting footwear—not simply conventional shoe manufacturing.

The result was a soft Japanese knitted upper designed to move with the foot, much like your favorite sweater rather than a rigid shoe constructed around it.

As your feet change throughout the day, the knit material is designed to adapt.

Our founder's grandmother was the first person to experience the difference.

She returned to her morning walks. Her blisters healed, and she was able to move more comfortably. Eventually, she walked three miles with her daughter—a moment the family once thought might never happen.
