A Family Rooted in Produce

The story of Tropical Fruit Box begins with a family that has always been closely connected to the land and the produce industry. Growing up in a Cuban-American family, the founder's kitchen was often filled with fresh avocados, mangoes, cassava, and many other tropical fruits and vegetables.

Her father has spent more than 35 years in the tropical produce business, sourcing exotic and tropical products from Florida, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America and distributing them throughout the United States.

Because of her family's produce business, the founder grew up visiting farms throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. These experiences introduced her at an early age to the people, farms, cultures, and unique produce behind the foods that eventually inspired Tropical Fruit Box.

A Childhood Memory in Ecuador

One of the founder's earliest memories took place in the mountains of Ecuador. As a child, she was walking hand-in-hand with her father when they encountered a farmer leading a group of mules carrying large sacks down the mountain.

The mules were transporting a local root vegetable called malanga. The freshly harvested roots were covered in soil, with brown exteriors and fine, hair-like fibers. To the founder, they looked unfamiliar and even somewhat rough on the outside.

The farmer proudly approached them and expressed how fresh the produce was before breaking one open with a crisp snap. Inside, the malanga revealed a clean, bright white interior. Her father carefully inspected it and smiled, while the farmer proudly shared something from his harvest.

Although she did not understand the significance of the unfamiliar root at the time, seeing the pride of the farmer and her father's appreciation helped her understand that there was something special about this produce—and about the people who grow it.

That early experience became part of the foundation for her appreciation of tropical fruits and vegetables.

Inspired by a Multicultural Family

Today, the founder has a family of her own. As a Cuban-American mother of three married to a Costa Rican, with a mother from El Salvador and a father from Nicaragua, her family reflects the diverse cultural experiences that have shaped her life.

Food has always been an important way for her family to connect with culture, tradition, and one another. Tropical fruits and vegetables were not simply ingredients; they were part of family life and memories passed from one generation to the next.
